In the last years of his life Sir Frances Dashwood (1708-81) became the subject of lurid gossip. This was due to his secret meetings with a group of select friends at Medmenham Abbey in Buckinghamshire which grew into the myth of the Hell Fire Club. All sorts of satanic and supernatural events were supposed to have occurred, but was there any truth in these rumours, and if not, what was really going on?
